Hi Guys,
I've been in Chennai on and off for a couple of months and the bad news is the nightlife is probably the worst in the world bar nowhere.  However, there seem to be some expat meet-ups that get organised.  Another group called Internations just organised a drinks party for expat a week or so ago, and apparently these are quite regular.  From a sports side, I've met a nice Aussie who runs a Scuba Diving and Surfing outfit in Pondycherry which is circa 3 hours drive south of Chennai.  Otherwise, at the weekend go to Ideal Beach Resort in Mamalapuram which is south of the city on the East Coast Road.  They have an Expats day rate of INR600 to use the hotels facilities and it nice to chill on the beach and play volley ball etc....
