Hi,

My wife and I will be coming to Nijmegen from Sept 14 to 17.  We're Singaporeans and will be there for a job interview.

Will definitely appreciate any thoughts if you can share in terms of cost of living and dog friendliness as to how Nijmegen is.

Thank you and Best regards,
Nijipore.

Hi Nijipore and welcome to the Forum.

At the top of this page is our Handy Tools link, if you select that, it will give you access to our Expat Guides that may provide answers to many questions you may have in planning your journey.

To answer your specific questions:

Cost of living.  Numbeo provides a website to help with this question; this link will take you to there.  Word of warning; the costs are based on the previous 12-months, so are always a bit behind the curve.

Dogs.  Holland is a dog-friendly country; however, many landlords will not allow them in their houses, so best to check when you start looking for somewhere to live.  Word of warning, you may have to pay tax on your dog(s) (hondenbelasting); this link will take you to the Nijmegen website that has the details; sorry, it's in Dutch, but so is life in Holland - so best you start learning the language. :)

Once you've read the guides, if you have any further specific questions, please come back to us.

Hope this helps.

Hello there  :)

I am from Cape Town, South Africa. I am currently in Holland until the end of October. I am looking for work here as I want to move here. I was an au pair in Holland in 2015 and I met a guy during that time. We have since been in a long distance relationship.

I am great with people, love helping where I can, very energetic, hard-working and open to any opportunities.

If anyone can help or knows of any one who has a job opening it would be really great.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi and welcome to the Forum. :)

Can you just confirm what sort of visa you are currently on?

I am currently here on a tourist visa.

Hi and thanks for your response.  Unfortunately, you won't be able to work in Holland on a tourist visa.  If you intend to come to Holland, then I'd recommend you check out our Expat Guides; you can access these by selecting the Handy Tools link at the top of this page, these guides contain articles you may find useful in planning your journey.

Bottomline is, there is nothing stopping you looking for work, but people won't be able to employ you until you have gone through the immigration process and registered in Holland.  You're not allowed to apply for a working visa while in Holland, it has to be done from another country.

Sorry, I guess it's probably not the answer you were hoping for.

Hope this helps.

No need to feel sorry Cynic.
She's better off with the right answer than she wants to read.

Thanks for the response :)

I know I can't work on my visa type but I came here to Holland to look for work for when I do move here. I think it's better to be here to go to interviews and to speak to people face to face. I believe the better your network the better your chances are of finding something and that is why I am on expat.com.

So maybe to be more clear, I have a question:

- What is the easiest way to come to Holland? Study visa or work visa?
I've been looking at both. I'm 21 years old and I haven't studied since high school thus I only have my matric certificate.

Your advice will be greatly appreciated :)

Work visa would be more difficult as the employer has to organise it at the immigration office and needs to prove why he needs a foreiger instead a Dutch.
Only highly skilled or rarely experienced people get the work visa.
Check out for the student visa and ask for information at the institution you want to study.

Thank you! :)

You will need to be accepted on to a course at a Dutch Uni before you can apply for the visa.  This link will take you to the website that will help you out.

Hey everyone, I am from Austria and I am working as an au-pair in Amsterdam for a year now. I am 18 year old and I am currently learning Dutch. I am looking for people who would like to explore the City together :)

Greetings from Boulder, Colorado!

I am planning a move to the Netherlands later this year. Can anyone recommend a great school near Utrecht? My son loves electronics, robotics, coding, art and music.

Nice to meet you all!

Jessica

Thanks :)

Hello Folks & the expat team,

Hope you all are doing good.

I am from India, looking forward to move to Netherlands in few months to pursue Masters in Law/legal. I hold an MBA in International Business degree and have 6 years of work experience with a Tier 1 Investment bank within Compliance & Risk department in capacity of a Specialist. I would like to know the job prospects after I complete my Masters after one year from the date I graduate (search year?).

Given the fact that I have already 6 years of experience, how likely (easy or difficult) would it be to find a job?

Any information or guidance will be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Ritwij and welcome to the Forum. :)

I have no experience relating to your question.  My only general comment is that if you're going to take a year out from your profession, then you will have a one-year gap in your CV (so, not be current), that your competitors may not have; so will your additional qualification be seen as a benefit to your potential new employers and be a benefit of more value than your gap?  In your place, I would contact the HR Departments of some of the International banks in Holland and ask them; I doubt if we have any experienced international bankers on this Forum to advise you authoritatively.

Hope this helps.

Call me Hanna, currently in Jakarta, a magical city in that far SouthEast Asia!

I read everyone's story and to be honest i feel glad that i stumbled across this site, meeting with so many people who share the same interest of living in The Netherlands. Hope i can leverage my circle of friends in Europe after a quite some time here :)

I have scheduled to visit The Netherlands in few weeks but just as a tourist only, i dont know whether it is common here to directly open up (just a liiiiiil bit) but i guess i wont hop on the plane unfortunately due to some personal reasons... Staying positive, i am sure i can reschedule and find an opportunity to work there!

If everyone have an info of open vacancies in Amsterdam area (or others i wont mind!) i would really thanked you guys for sharing me. So maybe i can propose another visa type which is a work visa and meet you guys there!

Looking forward to see what can this site brings.

Best,

Hanna

Hi All

Thank you for this platform

I received an incredible offer to work in The Hague, but need to provide own accommodation, as well as maintain things in SA. I would appreciate pointer on finding "cheap" accommodation that would fit the budget

Also advise on public transport would be appreciated

G

Hi G and welcome to the Forum. :)

To tide you over when you first arrive, something like AirBnB is useful; then once you arrive, at the top of this page is a link to our housing section; if there's nothing there to suit, then there are many websites that can help, one of which is Pararius; this link will take you to their website.

Public Transport; this link will take you to a pdf you can download with the details.

Hope this helps.

Hi all
Have now been in Amsterdam for approx. 4 months and have got the apartment settled and furniture in etc so now time to start making myself useful !!
My wife and I are NZ'ers but have not lived there for some 15 years now. Interspersed with stints in Switzerland (twice) and Australia. We have one son who is currently beginning his second year at Durham uni. My wife is an HR business partner for Perfetti van Melle, an Italian confectionery maker (think Chubba Chups/Mentos!!) so I am now free to find meaningful work or volunteering etc. I have put my job requirements on the proper channel for this site so I won't bore you with it here.
My interests are sports (who would have guessed being a Kiwi ! ) and photography so if there is anyone out there fancying a game of squash or golf, let me know.

Cheers
Jeff
