im planning to study in vietnam by the end of this year in a university in HCMC. i was wondering if i can find work once im there to support myself while i study.

You need a bachelor's degree and some sort of teaching certification (TEFL for example) to get a work permit here. Why don't you try tutoring fellow students? I have a cousin who did that in Paris many, many years ago.
