Wondering what my status would be

I was born in the U.S. And I gave birth to my son in Ecuador 38 years ago. We have not been back to Ecuador since he was 4 months old. I'm wondering, and I know I have to get an answer from official sources, but is he considered an Ecuadorian citizen? I had to get lots of paperwork and pay many fees to leave Ecuador.
We would both like to go back to live there.

There was an article in El Comercio (local newspaper) about the life of Cubans in Quito. Part of the article was about a couple whose child was born here and as such despite the parents being illegals they were granted residency. I don't recall if the child was a citizen by birth but I wouldn't doubt it as this country is quite protective of minors rights.

Do some googling in Spanish you might get a hit. But follow your own advice and get the info you need from authorities. Who knows what the law was 38 years ago and if birth in Ecuador back then constitutes citizenship today. Best of luck.
