Moving to Malta

Hi all!

I am new on this forum. The reason why I registered is because I honestly need help and advice from people that have experience with these kind of things!
I am a citizen of Bosnia and my wife is Swedish citizen. We currently live and work in Sweden however, we want to move to Malta. We haven't been looking for a job there (yet) but both of us are highly educated individuals.
We were wondering if (and how) we could move to Malta without having a job in the first place.
We have some savings and we're wondering if we can move based on economic self sufficiency?
Also, what kind of forms we would need to fill out in order to move to Malta?
Would it be a good idea to take a lawyer so that he could do these things for us?
One more thing: can we apply for residency permits while we are in Sweden or we need to go to Malta first?

Thank you for any help and advice you can provide, we will be very grateful :)

As Sweden is a member of the EU your wife can apply using the self sufficiency form (J) and you (as Bosnia is not yet a full member) can apply as a family member (form F)

Information is in the pinned post at the top of the forum , this is a direct link:-

There is a link in that post to 'Identity Malta' which will give you updated information, or at least as up to date as it ever gets!

@Serda88.

Please note that - according to law - your EU spouse is under no legal obligation to either notify the Maltese authorities of her presence or that of her non-EU family members in Malta OR register for ‘e-Residence Documentation' until three months have elapsed since the date of her arrival.

In this regard, please see the following excerpt: ‘…..Registration - You may be required to register with the relevant authorities, but only for periods of residence longer than three months......

.......Certificate and deadline - The deadline for registration is laid down by each EU country but it may NOT be less than three months from the date of arrival.

The relevant national authority should issue you with a registration certificate stating your name and address and the date of registration, IMMEDIATELY after presentation of the required documents.

Freedom to move and live in Europe - A Guide to your rights as an EU citizen - published by the EUROPEAN COMMISSION - DIRECTORATE-GENERAL JUSTICE - please see:

Under the circumstances, it would make most sense for your EU spouse to secure paid employment within the first three months of your arrival, before registering herself and her non-EU family members for ‘e-Residence Documentation', thereby avoiding the unnecessary expense of your buying comprehensive health insurance which is mandatory when registering for 'e-Residence Documentation' under ‘Economic Self-Sufficiency'.
