Speaking Thai in Thailand

I've been working my way through the Pimsleur CDs. They don't use any written instruction; it's all audio. So I'm getting a chance to practice my tones. At this point, I'm not sophisticated enough to categorize the different tones; I just mimic what I hear.

Most Thai teachers start with the writing system. I guess that's because they don't have any faith in any of the transcription systems, although they should just use RTGS. It's not perfect but it's easier than learning Thai writing.

When I get back to Mai I can take a more intensive course and polish my Thai.

They mention books and CDs for learning Thai. One set is by David Smyth, the other is by Benjawan Poomsan Becker.
Any recommendations on book/CD courses of study?
