I just moved here from Canada and will here for the next 6 months.
Was hoping to get some advice about purchasing a cell phone/landline/or skype? I'm not sure what the best option is for my short stay in the Netherlands.
What is best/what is cheapest?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

If you are talking about international calling then I would suggest you Active VOIP. Guess, the rates are similar to that of Vonage in US.
For local you can go in for cheap carriers like Lebara it has nominal local and international tariffs. Its 9 cents per/min - International call.

I know I have been using Magic Jack for a year and it is amazing; free international calls for less than $10 a month. When it comes to texting with my friends back home, I have a google phone number that forwards all texts to my email so I can still stay in touch with my friends. Hope this helps.
