I love photo threads because they tell you so much about a place.
More please.

There were all taken in and around Barahona. The first are some of my novia's daughters practicing their hairdressing skills on the galeria of our home. The second was taken in Cabral, a small town N of Barahona where there are a number of natural springs that are popular swimming holes. The third and fourth photos were taken on different days of the annual 27 de febrero carnaval. The two little girls are a sister and a cousin that live together and are inseparable. The taller girl in pink is the older 16 years old sister in different attire at the carnaval parades.  Barahona is port city of about 120,000  and was founded in 1820 by Haitian General Toussaint L'Overture, who was fighting the Spanish army at the time.

Haitian and Dominican history are closely intertwined and quite complicated between 1793 and 1844. You pretty much have to read a couple of books about each country to get it all straight. Most Dominicans and Haitians barely know the basics, even though it explains who they are. Local schools are pretty awful.

It is a sugar town in a sort of decline that had its heyday in the sugar boom of the 1920's. It is about 3½ hours  by Caribetours bus west of Santo Domingo. There aren't many tourists, and the most notable feature is the huge number of motorcycles zipping around. A lot of them are motoconchos, motorcycle taxis. The best free show in town is down on the Malecon on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Pizza D' Machito.  Caliente garantizada. Guaranteed Hot.

Mobile pizza - fantastic

New meaning to food trucks

That is a pretty old truck. I have no idea how long Machito has been a pizza chef, nor have I eaten his pizza. There is one decent pizzeria in town.

Awful (but acceptable to locals)  pizza  is more prevalent. There is a Pizza chain shop, which is mediocre and too expensive.
