Hmmm... I haven't seen one, but they are reported to have been introduced to PR.

The native spiders in Puerto Rico can give you a painful bite but are not know to kill humans.
However the Brown Recluse and other nasty ones have been introduced in the island and you may possibly encounter one.

From your brief description sounds like a tarantula which will not kill you. They like sandy soil to build their borrow. Found easily in piles of sand used for construction

I don't like spires either but they have a good job in controlling other insects.

The small lizards that are everywhere and sometimes come into the house are very beneficial in controlling the insects, don't kill them.

spiders give me the creeps.  Lucky I haven't run into any bad ones.  We had some big yellow ones on the bayou SE Texas - didn't like them either! 

We use an exterminator for periodic prevention.

I'm guessing that in PR, the majority of the big spiders are located in the mountain jungles.??

When I lived in Isla Verde, we walked to the beach and saw one on a wall. Freaked me out of course and I ran to the street. Now in a community and saw the same type in the patio. But our neighbors did cut their grass yesterday so that might explain why it came out of hiding. I think it eats the frogs and lizards. The coqui we usually hear at night wasn't heard last night. I have no problem with the little spiders outside but this thing was big and scary.

The huntsman can bite but they're incredibly unlikely to do so. I actually like having them around because they eat the other things I really cannot stand like palmetto bugs that wander in through the patio from time to time. They don't make webs, they just kinda hang out near the ceiling waiting for other bugs. Their bite is nothing more than a little nuisance anyway. Rey is right about the lizards too, they will eat all the nasties. For the longest time I thought I had a mouse in the house because of all the droppings I would see in the corners. Turns out they were lizard poo. Small price to pay for a bug free home and no chemicals.

Lagartijos are your friend and they make great ear rings. We used to have them bite our earlobes and have them hang from there as kids. Their teeth are like sand. Their tail is detachable, they grow a new one if hurt. But they do leave their droppings which is the only negative I know, but that means they are eating the bugs.

Ha Rey, my husband told me the same thing about the earrings...weird how that was a "thing" here..hmm.

We were kids, I used to carry a baby mouse in my shirt pocket at school, it would sleep there. Some girls were scared but must came over to pet it, it was a nice ice breaker that got me some dates.
