Temporary cell phone while on vacation

Hi all,
Coming to Ecuador from the states next month for vacation. Is it possible to pick up a "temporary" cell phone while we're there? We'll be in Quito and Cuenca.

Any help would be great.
Thank you,
Glenn

Hi Glenn,
I think buying a prepaid service phone will work fine for you, cost runs for less than a hundred bucks the unit. Pay as you use, loading the service starts as low as three dollars. In Ecuador, unlike the States you pay for outgoing calls but not for incoming calls.

Don't rent, neither buy at the airport - expensive. You will anyway visit Quito historic center. You'll have no problem finding a $30-35 phone there + $6 chip with $3 already on it, talking Movistar, but pretty sure Alegro y Porta have similar prices. There, you'll have a phone and a number, and even if you never load it again, it will work for incoming calls for 6 months. Then, before you leave, contact me, I'll buy it.

Thanks everyone. Big help. Glenn
