Migrating a Family from Spain advice needed

Hi Everyone, my name is Kate. We are a english family currently living in spain, I have 3 boys. I have hundreds of questions, I have researched on the web but are getting mixed messages to all my questions.

Where is the largest condensed area of economically sound expats?

I am looking at commercial properties to rent....what is permit 1, permit 2 etc?

Is it really impossible to open a bank account in Malta? does it take more than 6 months? Any recommendations for banks.

Best places for families to live?

I thank you so much for your responses.

If you look at the top of the page you should find the answers to some of your questions as they have been asked many times before, good luck.

Hi Kate
We are also an English family, living in Malta now and from our experience we have found depending on what Bank and who you speak to on the day in there you will get different answers from how to open a bank account!
My husband after getting no where with a few different banks went into BOV ( Bank of Valletta) and enquired....
He told them he hadn't got Maltese ID as yet and they said that was fine, the lady asked if he had a tenancy agreement /contract, a work contract and his passport...which he had all three on him and then she just asked for a reference from our Bank back in the UK ( easier said than done!) when she has that she says the account can open!
I will report back when this happens.

According to law, the regulations regarding access to and opening bank accounts with basic features should have been reformed by 18th September, 2016, whereby Malta ought to have adopted and published the laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with DIRECTIVE 2014/92/EU on………..access to payment accounts with basic features.

The regulations regarding access to and opening bank accounts with basic features are specified in Article 15, entitled 'Non-discrimination' and Article 16, entitled ‘Right of access to a payment account with basic features’:

HiHi ... another EU Directive which will not be complied with in Malta due to ignorance.
The complaint can be put on top of the heap with all others which have been forwarded to the European Court waiting for a decision ...

The FSA has ratified this one, from recent experience this is happening.

Perhaps try less ill informed out dated pessimism?

On the contrary, …..please see excerpts:

‘…..This infringement proceeding was opened in September 2012, following a number of complaints received from European Union citizens residing in Malta, concerning water and energy tariffs.

The Commission had declared that EU citizens were being charged the 'domestic tariff', which was approximately 30% higher than the 'residential tariff'……..The Commission informed the Maltese authorities that the application process needed to be streamlined, whilst providing redress [refunds for water and electricity consumption overcharges] to the applicants that may have been adversely affected throughout the years……’

In addition: ‘……last June a pressure group set up to campaign against the discrimination announced that it had reached an 'agreement' with the government which would allow EU nationals to apply for the lower tariff without needing their landlord's permission…….’

Think the statement
'This infringement proceeding was opened in September 2012, following a number of complaints' says it all,
September 2012 and things are only just changing.!

It's sad that it always takes a "pressure groups" and class actions in Malta to make things work as they do in all other EU member states ... however, as long as there's the nice weather and a number of tax benefits, it's a good country  :D

The most expensive areas, where economically sound people lives, are the Sliema/St. Julians area (if you are into apartments) and the Madliena/High Ridge area (it you prefer villas). Be aware that rental fees in those areas are very high.

You should first consider where your kids will go to school and where you'll work. You don't want to live far away from the places where you'll have to travel every day, specially in the maltese traffic.

Regarding banks...as already mentioned ...it all depends on the day....what bank you go to...who you see....is it raining...did they manage to park their car okay.....it generally is best if you take someone with you that already holds an account at that bank.....
