Married rates are more favourable .... The table on the ird site makes it quite clear.

I think a tax accountant know this better than anyone but I heard that it depends on couples total salary.

When you fill in the tax return you can work out both single and joint income tax liability and you are allowed to choose the lowest one.

The booklet that comes with the tax return is easy to understand and explains both methods.

If the single allowance is €9,101 each and the married allowance is €12,701 per couple, surely you are better off taxed as two singles as that gives a total allowance of €18,202 before tax?


It depends on how much you both earn as the calculation for tax after the allowance is not the sane for both.
