DANGEROUS SITUATION - JAKARTA FRIDAY 4/11

http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2016 … rally.html

Thousands of people demonstrate in Jakarta, demanding the immediate arrest Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama on blasphemy allegations.

Organizers have announced that 35,000 to 50,000 people would join the demonstration, and people from outside Jakarta had flocked to the city since yesterday. The National Police and the military had deployed thousands of personnel to secure the rally.

We've had reports of protesters making out their will before they travelled to Jakarta, meaning they're expecting serious trouble.
Basically, avoid the whole area today.

I just hope it'll simmer down by next week...

City was so quiet this morning as I went through but there were lots of parked up buses and police cars. Today I am in West Jakarta, so the journey home wont be too much fun. My wife works in Sudirman and they have closed access to it so she has had to walk from Senopati and will have to do the same going back.

Selamat Indonesia!

The right to protest and exercise freedom of speech are hallmarks of a true democracy, and Indonesia did an AWESOME job of how that can be done in an organized and peaceful way.

There was still trouble in the early hours in the city but it has all gone now. Outside the government buildings there is so much litter and still a few buses of tourist demonstrators getting ready to go home.
Friday was peaceful enough which was good and also the roads were clear so I was able to get from the airport to my house at 7pm on a Friday night without using much of the toll in 45 mins!!!!

The Indonesian goverment and police did a great job, most of the fighting being down to a small group of protesters outside Ahok's gaff and infighting between groups of protesters.

Dirty politics?

In follow up news, it looks like the whole thing might have been down to a political stunt by one of Ahok's opponents.

It says the video that caused the problem was edited to show blasphemy that wasn't there, and was accompanied by a somewhat naughty post on that facebook page.
Police are, according to the press, looking into the page, what they did and who owns it.

The other side should have been foreseen by all.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Sanitary Agency reported that the rally on Friday (4/11) has left a total 75 tons of garbage.

"In total, we have collected 75 tons of garbage. Kinds of garbage that litter the areas are bottles, Styrofoam, woods, stones and plastic,” said Isnawa Adji, Head of Jakarta Sanitary Agency, on Saturday.

To clean the garbage, Isnawa said that the agency deployed 500 personnel, 31 road sweeper cars, 15 garbage trucks, 11 toilet buses, eight pick up trucks, seven compactor trucks, and four container toilets.

"We’ve disposed all those garbage to the integrated waste management facility in Bantargebang, Bekasi. The cleaning process was done until 4 am on Saturday,” Isnawa said.

His FB page seems to agree

At least one pro Ahok site is calling for his arrest

Again, assuming the report is accurate, he admits ties to Ahok's political rivals

Indonesia's rather harsh defamation laws might well be used on this occasion.
One note, various 'interested' groups are really going out to spread misinformation with loads of dodgy looking reports about various things out there, so take all reports with a pinch of salt until/unless the police and courts take action.

I hate to say it, but it almost seems that some of these adversaries of Ahok are "going to school" on the current American election debacle.

My low opinion of the pathetic attempts at politicians in that election is no secret, and it does look a little as if the dirty tactics are being exported from the US to Indonesia.
It would be a great pity if that were the case.
I believe Indonesia has to get a little heavy on this sort of stuff as destabilizing this young democracy is serious stuff, and this case could have led to a very difficult situation.

Amen to that!

Ubudian I am happy to discuss further at Fly Cafe if you are there next weekend. I have seen you there once or twice before.

I'll be there (at the Fly) very early Wednesday AM for the election returns and likely until 11 or noon.  I rarely go to quiz nights (Friday) any more, but will be there for Thanksgiving dinner.

I don't recall meeting you at the Fly before (my bad if you spoke to me) but sure, we can chat if you'd like.

Cheers!
