Regardless of your feelings about the breakup of a marriage, many Filipinos are stuck in a failed or abusive marriage simply because of church and or civil law with regard to annulment of the union.
Then there is the sometimes exorbitant cost associated with the annulment or even a legal separation.
Apparently the Pope appears to have softened the Church's stance on annulments
"Following Pope Francis’ historic announcement that the annulment process will be simplified and made available for free, leaders of the Catholic Church in the Philippines feel that there will be an upsurge in the number of annulment cases in the country."
This, in some cases could be a blessing for a spouse who is unable to move on with his or her life because of the inability to separate themselves legally from a failed marriage.
