What is the different between CPR number and ID resident card ?

Hi
last night in Copenhagen the police stopped me , because i don't have an ID card ??? WTF
I never heared about ID card , they told me i have to carry id have my picture ,
I showed them my CPR number , but it wasn't enough
the took me to police station to make sure if this cpr was mine or not , because no picture on it ,
anyway
I would like to know the different between CPR and ID card ?and they way to get it
I have temporary resident ,and i don't know where to go for getting this card .
so please i need information

there's no such thing as ID card. Some people have driver's license that has pictures, but that's not a national ID card.

Maybe the police's just out trying to piss some immigrants off
