Dealing with homesickness in Fiji

Hello everyone,

Being an expat in Fiji can turn out to be a wonderful human, social or professional adventure... with potential moments of nostalgia and homesickness along the way.

What are your personal tips to prevent homesickness?

How do you deal with such feelings?

Are there shops or stores offering products from your home country in Fiji? Or maybe venues with music and ambiance from your homeland?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Just make yourself busy my dear. :)

Homesickness can be a problem; especially for the young.
I manage to go back to my family twice a year for about a month to
get my fill of kids and grandkids.  That usually does it.
Keeping busy helps too and of course, the internet and Skype help
with communications.

Making friends with other expats can be fun, entertaining, interesting
as well.  There is a learning curve with all of living here as one will
soon discover.

COST U LESS and ;New World Market and a few smaller shops carry some
items from the USA, AU, and NZ.

I hope this is helpful.

Hi Priscilla,

Well, it's been many years since I first came to Fiji, and as a dual citizen of Fiji and Her Majesty's fair land, I'd say establish some contacts, even just a few from UK over here (if and when you can find them - and hopefully their friendly : ) and connect with your family and mates back homes now and then. Understand also, that there have always been and there will always be those just like you who have the initial and sometimes long-running adjustment issues of living in a 'different world' where people for good or bad don't think or do things like back home. As a word of encouragement, remember also that you are becoming cultured and experienced in being more appreciative of the diverse world we live in than others who have never and may never have the privileges you have to travel and be a part of another nation.

Cheers and have a nice day : )
