Madeira Island, in Portugal, has been ravaged by a huge blaze since early this week. More than a thousand people had to be evacuated urgently on Tuesday 9. 3 people are reported dead while 3 have been seriously injured. Many tourists were also on the spot.
The blaze, which started on Monday night, spread rapidly to the rest of the area due to intense heat and strong winds. Several houses, buildings and a hotel were destroyed. Backing teams from Lisbon were soon deployed in the region. A total of 110 firemen, doctors and police officers have been mobilized.
Other regions, especially in the North of Portugal, have also been ravaged by major wildfires last week. According to media reports, more than 3,000 firefighters are still trying to control the blaze. High alert has thus been declared over half of the region.
Emergency plans have also been set up around Porto and Aveiro. According to local authorities, other fires have also been declared in Alentejo and Algarve.
Foreign nationals who are planning to travel to Portugal or who are already on the spot are advised to be careful. Moreover, you are advised to avoid camping or venturing in remote and forest areas.
