Sports in Barbados

Hello everyone,

The Olympic Games are now just a few days away and we would like to talk about sports.

What sports are the most popular and/or unusual in Barbados?

Are sports facilities easily accessible there? Where and how can one find sports clubs in the region?

Are there sports events regularly held in the country?

And you? What is your favourite sport? Which one(s) do you practice in Barbados?

Thank you in advance,

Priscilla

What sports are the most popular and/or unusual in Barbados?

Cricket is the most popular sport, football and basketball are also up and coming. Car racing, Horse racing, Cycling, Polo, golf, surfing, sailing, and just about any water sport can be found.

Are sports facilities easily accessible there? Where and how can one find sports clubs in the region?
The Kensington Oval is the main stadium, but there are several others and numerous playing fields and pitches. There are both cricket clubs, football and basketball clubs. The West Indies are the regional team, and the Barbados Tridents are members of the Caribbean Premiere League. Both are cricket teams. Hopefully, a national or regional football team will coalesce. The Garrison has a large horse track, and Bushy Park is a venue for car racing. Vaucluse is also another place, where there is a car racing track. There are several golf courses around the island, and easy to find

Are there sports events regularly held in the country?
In 2007 Barbados hosted the finals of the World Cup Cricket Tournament. Local sporting events can be seen almost every day. In the Spring all schools compete in track and field events. This usually takes place in the National Stadium. The garrison Horse race track holds events weekly with some international races at different times of the year. At Bushy park there are local as well as international races at times of the year. Holders fields hosts Polo international tournaments during polo season.

And you? What is your favourite sport? Which one(s) do you practice in Barbados?

Football and cricket are favorites. I cycle, but more for transportation and recreation.

Surprisingly, there are a lot of equestrian activities on the island. The British do love horses! There is some thoroughbred horse racing and a very respectable level of dressage. Trail riding, particularly in the northeast side of the island, is also popular.
