Expand your social circle in Australia

Hello everyone,

Moving to Australia means leaving one's family and friends behind. Creating a circle of friends or joining an existing one should therefore be paramount in order to fight loneliness in your host country.

But how can one develop a social network in Australia? Where and how to meet people there?

How easy is it to meet locals? What about cultural specificities?

Share your advice and experience!

Many thanks in advance,

Priscilla

I guess my main experience is that you have to push yourself to go out and find "your group". (eg. people you have fun with, you feel comfortable with, share the same passions).

For me, I sign up with "meet up" and find others with the same interests as me. As long as the group accepts you, (or you accept them), share the same interests... I think you'll be ok.

It's not easy.. but you have to keep looking. Chin up!

Find online friends also... (if you are shy)

Volunteering is a excellent avenue to expand your circle and to create networks that may lead to jobs. As I lived in rural Queensland then I volunteered with the Show Society, Country Women's Association,  Lions Club, and multicultural associations. It was great experience that helped me forge long-lasting friendships.
