Schooling In Mauritius

Hi All

I am considering a job offer in Mauritius and would be looking to bring my family over. My main concern however would be the availability of english speaking schooling for my children children 11 and 14 years of age.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Lutus, welcome to the blog :)

Call me biased, but I'd recommend Northfields!

Keep your eyes open for a new private, English-language secondary school option coming in early 2012... :)

Looking at the Northfields website, I calculate a cost of approximately  $ 22 000 per annum for the first year for two children which includes the inception fee. Could anybody please  confirm if this is about correct?

Hi Lutus. Personally when it comes to secondary schools in Mauritius, I find a lot of these schools are a waste of money. I attended a normal secondary school in Mauritius and my English is not to 'degree standard' at all. I'm only in IT and, though a number of people say I've done quite well in this field, nobody has ever complimented me on my 'written english'. Well, I've just visited the Northfields website (a few minutes ago) and immediately spotted FOUR mistakes in their first three sentences under 'About us'. First sentence... "Northfields is one of two English-medium International schools in Mauritius. It is however the only one situated n the North of the island." ('in' missing an 'i'). The second sentence reads..
"The school was founded in 2002 by a small group of parents who were concerned about the absence of choice of school and the two and a half hour daily bus ride necessary for children living in the North to attend the only other school of this type available." (That's right, missing at least one comma). Third sentence.. "During the first six months of Northfields' existence, the school was housed at, utilised the facilities of, and relied on the teaching staff of the International Prepatory School (IPS)." Yes, excessive comma after 'facilities of' but, check this out, who the hell spells 'Preparatory', 'Prepatory'? (A five-year old maybe????).
How much was this 'English-Speaking' school? $22,000 per annum for two kids?
