Essentials to live in Gambia

Hi,

As an expat living in Gambia, what would you advise the ones about to pack to bring along?

What are the items you can easily find in Gambia? On the other hand, what is less common or quite expensive?

Share with us what you would recommend to bring in one's suitcase or container when moving to Gambia.

Thank you in advance,

Christine

Well small items you can pack that prove quite useful and and are very sellable when you leave, or to give to a helpful family....

A hand torch or a head torch and a supply of AA batteries or small charger and four rechargables

A couple of those 13 amp trailing leads that you can get from a Poundshop.

A can and bottle opener

If you take a mobile one of those boost charge boxes

And any bicycle spares you can carry, you make good young friends that way who know where to get
Delasi at the best rate

And if you are using a laptop and want good wi-fi it is worth going to Gamtel and getting a plug in dongle week/month pay as you go to have your good 24/7 own connection all over.

Have a good trip.  Nightowl.

hello!

how is electricity and water in the Gambia are they available 24/7?

is there portable internet devices so one does not have to have a line in the house like with MTN or Orange?

thanks!

Electric supply around the costal (tourist) areas has been more erratic than normal early 2017.  That does not bother the locals much their consumption in low.  If you are renting  check your hosts have a switch over generator,  usual cut out is hour to two early evening, just when you might need it.  Keep phone batteries, etc well charged, and a battery lantern is a good buy at about 350D Serekunda, Banjul market or others.

If you want reliable internet service, satatite instellation is the only real answer, some of the better bars are okay, but even the bigger hotels have slow service and just in limited areas.  Real answer is to take your laptop into Gamtel or Africel office,  main road into Serekunda off Bertil Harding Highway,  buy a USB dongle and credit it by the month with a card (from them only)  multiples of 200D chances are their IT guy has do a quick programme download for you, so you got the icon installed, so far no one has charged us "tourists" for that yet... but not that many people bother for 7/10 day visit.
Then you got full internet at a good speed just about anywhere you go.
