Essentials to live in Canada

Hi,

As an expat living in Canada, what would you advise the ones about to pack to bring along?

What are the items you can easily find in Canada? On the other hand, what is less common or quite expensive?

Share with us what you would recommend to bring in one's suitcase or container when moving to Canada.

Thank you in advance,

Christine

If you have good down jacket and pair of solid winter boots bring them along with hat and mittens

Hmm... good one. If you're moving during the cold season like end of fall, winter or early spring, be sure to bring along winter jackets, scarf, mittens / gloves, wool socks, a hat that covers your ears too. Because it can get pretty cold from the airport to where ever you're headed to in between.

Now if you come from some places where the population size of your community in Canada doesn't warrant an ethnic grocery store to carry products that you are so familiar with back home (due to volume) and the for first few months being away, having these products would be essential to combat your bouts of home-sickness, then do bring them along. Note: nothing of fresh meat or has milk content in them, otherwise, the border guards would discard them.

If you are on contact lenses and use disposable ones, do bring along as much batches as you can. They probably would cost lest other than here.

I'd be careful with bringing along home appliance especially kitchen ones depending on which country you come from as the voltage and frequency might differ. But for electronics like mobile phone, laptops - those are fine. As long as you can get them cheaper from where you are, by all means bring them here. Cause it can cost more here, when HST, waste disposable fee, green fee, GOD knows what other fees get added on. Do not be fool by the price tag on the shelves or the online ads....!

Apart from that, good luck and have fun spending and living in Canada. I don't want to give away too much and spoil the fun for you guys!

It depends A LOT on where in Canada you are planning to move to.

Toronto has scores of expat neighborhoods by ethnicity where you will find pretty much anything you could get in your home country.
Vancouver, has a good amount of Asian goods, but not as much from other regions. Other cities vary.

I would recommend bringing only irreplaceable items (those that have meaning to you and you would no longer be able to buy in a store).

If making several trips, bring only the essentials in the first trip and you will then be able to better judge what to bring and what to leave behind if shipping things on a container later.

Almost anything from a North American Brand (and most European ones) you will be able to get in Canada cheaper than back home.

Also, unless you have already been in a country with this amount of snow and subzero temperatures and already own the proper gear there, don't buy winter gear until you are in Canada. You can buy used or discounted items if money is tight the first year, but they are made for Canadian weather. Anything you own from milder climates will be good for Spring and Fall at best.
