Zika virus - just media hype?

We've heard in recent news to exercise caution in traveling to Panama, Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil due to the Zika virus outbreak (esp. pregnant women). There have been reported cases in the US. I just wonder if the media is sensationalizing this new, mysterious "disease." Lots of speculation and uncorroborated reports abound. I did read in local English news in UAE that they were offering refunds to individuals traveling to the above-mentioned countries in the next few months. The new "targeted" focus is FL because of the high humidity and mosquito population. Anyone with medical background with accurate info to advise us?  These "hysteria-raising" phenomena tend to be more localized than the media would lead us to believe.

Thank you.

News on Australian TV states that there have been 3 cases of Zika notified to the health authorities there. 1 in WA and 2 in Qld.

the 1 in WA and 1 from Qld are adults and have recently returned from South America and the 3rd case is a child who has been on holiday in Samoa.

The big worry is the Olympic Games and some athletes are considering whether to go or not.

This disease apparently was first noted in 1947 but may have mutated over the years.

Hello peripatetic_soul,

If you ask me it's pretty much hype and a mountain of unproven leaps of logic by some pretty dodgy Brazilian researchers. I've been living in Brazil for 14 years now and am without any doubt the "go to guy" for anything Brazilian.

You may want to read the following topic threads from the Brazil Forum, I think my comments will be quite interesting to you.

You've also got to remember that much of this handwringing is from the same World Health Organizatiion - WHO who has preached that we should all stop eating bacon because it's more dangerous to us all than a week in Chernobyl.

The press love to make a meal of anything that will sell their rags, but there's clearly a problem as so many governments are taking interest in the issue.
That's before we look at the human cost, especially for the parents of so many babies.

Hi there,
The admin relayed me to your threads in the Brazil forum which I read in detail about Dengue Fever, etc. and lack of governmental interventions.  Yes, I can see it's media hype and partly guilt for not having contained other maladies caused by those insidious mosquitoes. Thanks much.

Best regards,
