7500 RM job in Bayan Lepas is acceptable?

Hello All,

I am currently from Mumbai , India working as Software engineer with 4 years of work experience.
I have an offer in hand in Malaysia located at Bayan Lepas, Penang. What I am offered is 7500 RM per month .

Is this offer acceptable? what will be my estimated expenses of staying there?
How much will I be able to save?
I am single currently and would like to bring my mother later on to Malaysia.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards,
Deep Desai

It is very good for a start, enough to live on comfortably alone.

Depending on your life style; for an average person, half of it can be saved on monthly basis. Take forinstance if you are gong to base your life on the following;

Feeding RM50 x 30 = RM 1500
Accomodation = RM1200
Transportation = RM 600
Miscellaneous = RM 550

The above estimates are on monthly basis, there are guys that can live on half of the above quote, some are already living on one seventh of what you are going to earn.

But if you are the type that mind liqour, night clubs, escort services, etc, I don't know how much you may need, because reckless social life has no scale of expenditures.

You need to compare what you earn in India, your life style, your future aspirations and base your decision on those prospects.

That is my take I for one, because different person, different ideas, that is individual differences.

Goodluck pal.

Hi Deep,

Keeping in mind that you have 4 years experience, this salary is good.
You can save a good amount if you live a balance life here.

Also, don't ignore that economical condition of Malaysia right now is not at all good and we also don't know when it will stabilize. Govt has imposed 6% tax also.  Transportation cost has increased so inflation will raise.

So I would strongly recommend you to keep yourself updated with this information as it will effect you directly. Keep your eyes open because I have seen people that they decide to go back due to ignorance while coming to Malaysia.

Apart from that, IT market is good here. After 2 yr experience you will be in better position to decide about your future. You can move within Malaysian IT market.

Here is my analysis

Food RM 30 x 30 = RM 900 ( You can save upto RM200 more with compromising on food quality. It all depends )
Accommodation = RM 600 to RM 1200 ( Room )
Transportation = RM 300 to RM 600
Miscellaneous = RM 550
Shopping = RM 500 to RM 1000 ( Keep a per month budget for shopping )

All estimates are on per month basis.

Hope this would be helpful for you.

Thank you for your answers.

Just to keep in mind, my salary after tax will be 5900 Rm per month.
Is it still acceptable?
I mean are there any ways where I can deduct taxes.
Also, the expenses mentioned by takes away half of my salary.
I have not much expenses. I guess just food ,stay and travel.
Parties maybe once a month.

Hi,

It's acceptable. If the company provide lodging is much better. Otherwise, you can rent a room for 400-600ringgit (includes elect & water), food expenses 800-1000, petrol 400, mobile bill 200, overall monthly expenses 3000myr.

Hope this mesge find you well.

Best Rgds,

Joyce

You also need to take into account medical cover if your employer is not providing it.

Since this is your first opportunity to work outside you home country and you are still at Junior level ( having 4 yr exp ) I would say you can accept this offer.

You will get the chance to work in a new country with a new environment, new challenges and opportunities.  So don't just look at money factor, look at overall picture.

Yes, medical should be provided by the company, otherwise Simply REJECT. Medical is very expensive here. I hope company is giving Family medical ( wife and kids included )

I would still say, if you think you can grow in India more and you feel that you have more opportunities there then DON'T COME. If you think you can save more money there and can grow more faster then better to stay there. India has very good IT market.

So think from all perspective and then take a decision with full confidence.

Hope this answer would help you.

Thank you for providing great insights.
The company is not providing accommodation.
Yes the company provides the medical expenses and also one round trip to India every year.
There are some other benefits that all companies give like share purchase, annual bonus,etc.

Also I wanted to know if there are ways in which tax deductions can be saved in Malaysia by a foreigner?
And how is Bayan Lepas,Penang as a place to stay?

As a Penangite, Bayan Lepas is a free trade zone. Majority of the buildings in the area are factories. You may have to find another location to stay in and commute to work. Traffic is bad at times (usually around 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.) but if your company provides transportation, you shouldn't worry. Penang island is pretty small (you can literally do a round island trip by can within 4 hours) and there is an abundance of food. The local indian population also mainly speaks Tamil so there should be no problems in communication. Local food typically ranges from RM 5 per meal - RM 15 per meal. There is even a little India downtown where you can get your spices and ingredients for cooking. RM 5800 is enough to live comfortably but you need to consider the dropping Malaysian Ringgit if you plan to stay in the long term. However, people in Malaysia are generally friendly and you can buy most things that you can get from 1st world countries.

Thanks for your helpful guidance.

I would like to know some points here:
1. If not Bayan Lepas, where do people stay along?
2. Is public transportation available to travel to Bayan Lepas?
3. Not all Indians speak Tamil , its a regional language in India. I do not know that language :)
    I am from Mumbai .
4. Hows the lifestyle like?
