Hi, like to apply for permanent residency in Asuncion very soon, and like to know if I can leave Paraguay for 7or 8 months while the application is being processed.

I think for PR 8 month is enough. But for your cutizenship you have to wait more than 3 years.

So what will happen with my application while I am away? I would need to go back home to finalise everything. Could I just pick up my residency permit after returning back to Paraguay?

Your questions are valid, Mal, but don't expect you can just pop into and out of a country at your personal convenience.
Applying for residency implies an intent to live in the country.
Don't rely on well-meaning but possibly clueless posters on this forum for the answers. Ask an official at the immigration office or an attorney or a visa facilitator.
