Censorship in China

Scaling the firewall of digital censorship:

You who are living in China, what do you think about all this? Is it an improvement to what already exists? Do you use "anomysing" services like www.anonymouse.ws?

May not live in China, but next door........... but its an interesting topic.

I think censorship in generally is bad..... but there are some quite interesting points raised in this article.

Interesting to know that the internet in the UK is censored.

Very interesting article indeed!

I'm living in China. I have to admit I haven't had a look at the article in full but though the firewall is high, it's not very thick. It would be easy to download a piece of software so that you can view any site. Of course I don't do this but if one wanted to it would, hypothetically, be very straightforward.

I'd like to know how to go around this Chinese firewall... i mean you sort of get used to it and it s not really that big a deal, but we cannot access - for instance:

*BBC
*Blogspot sites
*Wiki

It's the same with the Hong Kong news (TV) here in Guangzhou... at times they just put in a shampoo commercial right smack in the middle of it just to block out some story about democracy or whatever.

I am not into politics too much, so from that point of view i don t really care, but it s more like... you know.. a bit silly... i mean ... we are all grown ups right? No need to babysit "us".

Having said that, large parts of China are not fully "educated" yet so in that way it makes sense to filter certain things out.

Ps. Just wrote a blog about it: http://www.arnoudforyou.com/internet-ma … china.html

Well, there's a few ways:

1. Download a program called TOR and use a firefox extension called TOR button. It's slow, but you'll access anything.

2. Get the GLadder Firefox extension, which was written just for the Great Firewall. This is quicker, but doesn't always work.

3. Find an anonymous proxy online (such as anonymouse.org). There are loads of these and most aren't blocked....

I use a VPN service out of the states.  There is a modest fee but it's well worth it, as I have complete internet access.  You can find VPN services easy enough via a google search.

You know, there's plenty of solutions for those of us who can't access certain sites here in China, but what about those whose personal, apolitical sites are actually blocked in China?  I say this after months of fighting against the great firewall here...IT SUCKS!

Thanks, it was nice to get that off my chest.  Blocking is just an avoidable annoyance most people...for some it strips us of good readers and fun comments.
