Buying a car in Thailand

Hi,

To be able to move in Thailand, a lot of expatriates think of buying a car, whether new or second-hand.

What are the formalities to buy a vehicle in Thailand: car registration, insurance, etc.?

What are the relevant authorities or organizations to contact?

How long does it take and what are the associated costs?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

If you really want to drive in the crazy traffic (which takes strong nerves, constant alertness and lots of patience in the ubiquitous jams!), get an old car that can take the unavoidable knocks and dents.
I engaged (for a resonable fee) a Thai friend of a friend, who runs a taxi business and thus knows something about cars, to look for a good used one for me. In the end, I bought a 17-years-old Corolla (not an uncommon age in Thailand!), which turned out to be a good choice, and sold it again at the end of my stay at 2/3 of the buying price.
Registration and paperwork was also done by the friend - me as a foreigner would never have managed the buerocracy and language barrier!
