Getting internet connection in France- HELP!

I have recently purchased an apartment in nice and urgently need to get internet connection.  Extensive research in internet is sending me in circles, as info numbers are only for calls within france (am in CH right now).  THere is no phone line in apartment, nor is there fibre optic cable yet in building, but apt is in VV, i.e. densely populated.  I read about possibility of connection for apts w/o phone (ALICE BOX) but cannot find a way to call them, and am confused by the whole thing.  If there is a way to get service without having to have a phone line installed, I would like to do that.  can anyone point me in the right direction. an actual phone number would be greatly appreciated!  thanks! janine

You can always get internet connection via a USB internet thing - clé as they are called here - not cheap but good enough.

Or you could talk to a nearby neighbour if your laptop can pick up their wireless signals - offer to pay half the cost.

Hi there

Your best bet is to go to SFR and buy a satalite phone, you can connect via a Mobile, they wii tell you which type to buy if you do not already have one. If you do check on yur setting you might be able to do it with the phone you have.

Hi,

I believe that if you go with SFR (SFRbox http://adsl.sfr.fr/ and http://adsl.sfr.fr/offres-adsl/internet … -de-ligne/) or with Free (Freebox http://adslcgi.free.fr/subscribe/NDI0_indexnewline.html) you don't need to install a France Telecom landline and pay both (I would rather go with SFR if you don't know much about Telecom, Free is rather bad with client support services). However I'm not sure how it works in case you don't have a landline already working.

In case of doubt, you can also call France Télécom / Orange (you can numbers for mobile client abroad, not sure it works but you can try http://assistance.orange.fr/qui-contact … s-2238.php) or chat with them http://www.webcontactcenter4.orange-bus … ente.jelly

Calling from outside France: I guess as an expat I have the same problem, it is a hell of a trouble to join any services (Oh and I'm not blaming France, it's the same everywhere) Sometimes 0800 numbers work with Skype (you need to dial 0033-800-xxxxxx).

If you can't do it abroad, I would recommend to wait until you are settle in France. It's sad to say, but when you move abroad it's easier to do everything once in the country. In France you have free wi-fi in a lot of places (café, restaurant, library...), it shouldn't be difficult to find a connection.

Also: you will need to have a French bank account to open a landline (also the same in UK, Germany...).

If I can help you, feel free to ask.

Good luck :-)

Hi if you dont have a phone line, than you need to purchase a usb a neuf doongle, plug into usb and put the disk into computer, put credit on your dongle, dial and you should be able to connect,if you dont speak french, down load google translate .
This is good as dont need phone line, its a pay as you go so,its just like a top up,however just top up as and when,no point putting 1 month, when you just want 4 one day, good luck.
I myself bought a neuf box, cost 30 euro per month telly, internet, international free calls.

thanks everyone and esp to Celine for the information!  My biggest problem is just being able to call from outside the country as the free 4 digit phone numbers are not accessible from here.  I am trying to get this done, because I have subletted the apartment for a couple of months and have promised a connection, otherwise it wouldn't be so urgent! I have just subscribed on line for the Alice Box, but don't know if this will really go through, and need to speak with an agent. So far, I tend to agree with Celine, who says Free  is not good with customer service!!  (unfortunately, I saw this post too late!)  Unbelievable that I cannot even find an address to send an e-mail to!  just facs & formular questions!  I am going to nice tomorrow, am not sure it will be easier there but maybe I can call free info number from a phone booth, if such a thing still exists!  janine

You should get a chat access using your "compte abonné" (client access/intranet)

Otherwise try

Good luck.

Since the connection is not for you then you'll need to give your tenants the USB WIFI dongle (that you will pay for and credit) - you can say with a clear conscience that you've provided an internet connection as promised, but if you ever want one for yourself you should know that these types of connections are not very reliable - they work "when the work" and when they don't you just have to wait. In short, getting a land-line installed is the only way to get a mostly reliable connection.
