Quito Fires and Smoke

Portions of Quito are being affected by fires and related smoke.

This developing story is being reported on the ground by Quito's El Comercio newspaper, www.elcomercio.com ...

As of this post, affected areas include La Floresta and Guápalo.

A new thread on this topic was eliminated by the Home Office after the OP claimed or implied without verification that Quito firefighters have been dying.  We have no confirmation of such deaths.

Some posts at the Cotopaxi volcano thread about the Quito fire situation are being reviewed by the Home Office due to being off-topic, and for this reason and others, this new thread has been created.

We advise posters, going forward, to substantiate the source of any death(s) or property damage being reported for the first time.

The point is to maintain accuracy and proper perspective on a matter with potentially serious public health consequences.

Do not post with all-capital letters as this is considered to be online shouting.  Keep calm in general and in your posting.

El Comercio newspaper -- www.elcomercio.com -- is reporting that over 100 firefighters have been brought in to Quito and Pichincha province from Guayaquil and coastal communities to deal with fire danger.

For the first time in weeks, Quito had a rainy day on Wednesday.  The recent dryness has contributed to the fire situation.  Fire season in Quito is typically August and September.

A Quito tabloid called The Extra ran the headline on Wednesday, ¡Se Quema Quito! -- Quito on Fire!  A photo on page 1 showed firefighters battling a substantial fire in a vegetation-rich section of the affected areas.
