Visa on arrival at Vietnam/Laos border

You can travel on Highway 8 from Vinh City to the border crossing of Can Treo.
You can get visa on arrival on the Lao side. Cost is $35. Make sure you have the correct amount as they sometimes do not have change for large denomination notes.  Best check bus companies online. 
If you use a company then they can organize the VOA for you at an extra cost.

There is now a bridge across the Mekong at Xiengkok village, Long District, Luang Namtha Province in Laos which will get you into Myanmar. Opened a couple of months ago. The only land border crossing from Laos into Myanmar. Again just Google search for buses from Vientiane.
