Music in Australia

Hi,

Music is said to be a universal language. Indeed it helps to discover and better understand the culture of a country.

What are the most popular music genres in Australia? How about traditional music and instruments?

Who are the local artists you would recommend?

Where can you listen to them: are there any concerts or music festival held regularly?

Thank you in advance for participating,

Kenjee

Australians enjoy a huge variety of music from opera, jazz, blues and everything to rock, hip hop, pop and reggae to country music.  Music is an integral part of many Australians lives and it is played in and around every city and country town around the country.  You only have to visit the countless pubs, nightclubs, or RSL/social clubs  and bars and invariably there will be live music played in one or more of the countless thousands of venues around the country.  Every single little country town in Australia (even those with a population of only around 50 people) has a PUB and just about every PUB has a stage on which, at some time, is a live performance of music and entertainment.

The LIVE Pub Music scene in Australia is unique and has created and evolved some of the world's most famous rock bands, eg ACDC, Cold Chisel, Icehouse, Savage Garden, INXS, Midnight Oil, The Easy Beats, Silverchair, Men at Work, the Bee Gees (yes, they started in the pub scene in Australia when they were children), Little River Band, the Divinyls, Mondo Rock, Jet, Powderfinger and thousands more!   Some of the greatest rock bands in the world started their careers on the tiny stages of local Australian Pubs or Clubs in suburbia or in one of the many social clubs in the country.  Sadly, the once lively pub scene is changing somewhat and nowhere near as vibrant and innovative as it was throughout the 1970's and 1980's when it spawned some of the biggest names in the business - many clubs are now taking the less expensive option of hiring DJs and playing recorded music which is inhibiting the number of venues for up and coming Australian bands.  :(

Australia has countless fabulous bands.  Some of my favourite Australian bands and solo singers, that go back a few years to current times, are:
Mondo Rock, Missy Higgins, the Loved Ones (fantastic band of the late 1960s), Little River Band, Slim Dusty, Helen Reddy, Jeff St John, Renee Gayer (fabulous blues singer), the supremely talented Doug Parkinson, John Farnham, Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave, Paul Kelly, the incredible McClymonts (very talented harmonising girl country band), Rick Springfield, Tina Arena, Gotye and so many more.

In addition to the lively, ever changing live music scene in the pubs and clubs around Australia, this country holds some of the biggest most exciting music FESTIVALS in the world.  One of the biggest COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVALS is held in Tamworth (NSW) every year and even if you don't like country music, the atmosphere is electric!  Country music fans from all over the world travel to Tamworth Country Music Festival which culminates in an absolutely fantastic world class concert - you need to book at least TWO YEARS in advance to attain accommodation though because it is so popular!

No matter what your taste in music, you will find a venue somewhere in the big cities of Australia especially in Sydney and Melbourne where we are spoilt for choice.
