Driving in Algeria

Hi,

What do you think of the way people drive in Algeria? How different is it from your home country?

Respecting the road safety rules, driving etiquette such as general courtesy, speed excess… what are the characteristics of the driving style in Algeria?

Share with us the difficulties one may face when driving in Algeria: peak hours, road conditions, accident, etc. and your advice to drive safely in the country.

Thank you in advance for participating,

Maximilien

Crazy driving. Not much Courtesy " you have  to show your teeth"  or man up to cross an intersection or at a roundabout.
You better be aware of what's going on on every side of your véhicule ( front, back, left and right) because the basic rules of driving such as using the left lane to pass a vehicle are not abide by. Many people are driving way too fast and there are quite serious crashes almost everyday.
Some people also think that turning the blinking light on gives them priority on you and change lanes without even checking if it is clear in the back

You can drive but the problem is, if the police takes your driver license, you cannot get back at least 2 mounts. Be careful about that :)

Drivers in Algiers...mmmmm...Crazy,mad,every man for himself, comes to mind...
They usually remind me of those video games!!!

Bus stops on motorways, reversing cars on motorways, people having a walk on motorways, kids coming from school walking on motorways...wedding cars are very iratic and like to do everything to keep up with each other, sometimes at the cost of other drivers..
I must say though,if they know your foreign it helps to be able to park in places your not supposed to,most Police don't speak English,so telling you off would be difficult and Algerians generally have a great respect for us foreign women,so no complaints here, just cars on motorway go way too fast, weaving in and out like they are invincible!! Slow down you guys it's so dangerous!!!
