In process of Interview - expected salary?

hey, first post in the forum  :)
I am from India & in process of interview for a job, I know i will be asked for expected salary and I am not sure what I should ask, so here I come to the experts to ask for there advice and suggestion.

First I'll describe my profile -
I am a Mechanical engineer by profession with 8 Years of experience. I was being interviewed for a MNC software company as a Pre sales consultant for a location in India, but after my first interview the guy taking the interview told me that I more suitable for a post located in Malaysia and he referred me to their Malaysian branch located in Persiaran KLCC, Kuala Lumpur City Centre. now if i get selected for this job what salary should I ask them.

Here's my situation -
- First I will come alone and then I'll be bringing my wife and two kids, older one is 3 years 6 months and younger one is 1 year old.
- I want to live a middle class lifestyle when I'm there and stay in a secure place near to my work place.
- I would like to use public transport as much as possible
- I want to save money

Here are my questions -
- What salary I should ask for?
- what benefits I should ask from company, is accommodation and schooling a option to ask for considering its a big MNC?
- what age my kids should start to go to a school in KL? i want a budget school not too expensive not to cheap
- best area to search a secure apartment considering travel to work place (mentioned above) via public transport or may be less house rent and transport by taxi, what is better?
- what is the average yearly increments?

I have had a look on the forum and the salaries can be very much varying based on years of experience and the field of work, so that is the reason I am asking my case separately on the forum.

Sounds like a job scam, as I have heard about this address before. Its too expensive an address to operate ITC business from that location.

I was expecting your reply,  looking at the other threads in the forum,  you are the man to get answers from.
It's not a job scam because I know the guys personally who work in india and the company is a world leader in that kind of software solutions,  I can pm you the Complete address if you think so :)

The 03 phone number (03 XXXX) is interesting to see if it matches with the location for the number sequences. As long as the salary is twice what you are earning now that would cover expenses. Education from age 5 or 6 would cost about RM1500 per month. Basic salary needs to be minimum RM5k to bring dependents.

Do you mean that phone number starting with +60 (03XXX) can be a job scam

To match the location the phone number would need to be +6 03 2XXX

Yes indeed it starts with the same series,  but Gravitas it would be awesome if you can reply to questions step wise,  in same manner I asked them.
I am thinking to ask Rm15k, but then I don't want it to be too less or to more

Don't understand what the job is when you say aftersales - does that mean help desk?  If so then RM8k is more realistic.

This thread has a salary guide.

https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=482797

yes I found that PDF while googling for the salary range, below is what I conclude

1. Piping Engineer -  5-8 years  7,500 - 13,00 (mine is 8yrs)
2. Pre-sales Engineer - 2-4 years 4,500 - 6,000 (mine is 8yrs)

these above mentioned profiles sums up my 8 years
I am a guy who's into piping design engineer and the software used to cater these services is my most valuable skill, so the company that makes this software wants to hire me, so that I can help understand requirements of the customers and give them demo's and presentations of existing solutions and even customize the software as per the requirements of the customer.

so now can give me a guess now?
because when i read posts from Nemodot on other threads, 8K is quite less

There are some restrictions in the industry for overseas hirings of engineering and technical specialists.

If you look at glassdoor you can find out salary ranges.

I had a look on the web[age, but i guess my profile is not in the list, but i will leave those details to the company, because they are the ones who have to hire me and do the process and looking at there reputation i dont think they will risk anything in paperwork.
I have had a look on glassdoor but it was no help.
I guess I will have to wait for their offer instead of mentioning them my expected salary.

Glassdoor is usually very accurate

The search for this result was "pipe engineer glassdoor Malaysia"

Thanks for your help, I will update you once I get any update from the employer on the salary part, rest of the things I think i can browse on forum and then update here if i find something useful,
one more question does the condos which say one bedroom and one bathroom (studio), have kitchen included in them or is there a common kitchen like in hostel?

I am asking this if I have t stay with family, its better to have separate kitchen.

Yes, interested because its a niche area. The company must be an O & G one or related to industry because they are located in and around the PETRONAS Twin Towers. Where you live have not answered yet. That depends on your salary at the end of the day and being on the LRT train line to get to work. Housing is expensive in KLCC and schools a bit non-existent but some in nearby suburbs. Live in an area that has internationals is my advice and don't be tempted to stick to an Indian quarter.

Yes indeed its related to O &  G,  I will have to make a budget for the schools because if they give me 8k then I think it's a tight spot to be in.

I too plan to get a good budget international school because after Malaysia my next target is europe :D

I read on the forum somewhere about the "time"  school,  I guess it has british curriculam.

if you suggest avoiding Indian quarter, what is the good area to live in, my priority is security and not too expensive :-)

Hi,

I would suggest you to ask for 15k , you may get around 12-13k, that would be fine. 15k is queit high as i have heard here managers will get around 12k in IT industry..but still kL is expensive city you must ask that much .. i am having 5.6 years experience  in IT  and recently moved to penang city, and my pay is 6k RM and i am single. since you're a family man you must ask more as you should manage your family as well as you need to save money..

i agree with you, so how is your experience in penang. I guess it must not be as costly as kuala lumpur.
have you had any change to calculate you monthly savings or expenditure?
also do you get 6k before tax deduction or its the in hand salary?

since i have joined recently i.e on july 2nd. I am yet to get salary.

as per my friend sayins my salary will be something like this .

26% tax on 6000RM ( Mandatory for 6 months )= 1560 will be taxed per month.

after tax : 4440 will be your net pay per month.  ( i am not sure about any other deductions other than tax from my employer)

Rent : currently i am staying in a 3bhk apartment ( rent : 300RM each person)  with 3 friends , i will spend around 10RM daily for break fast and lunch and for dinner we cook in room.

so i feel around 1000RM will go for my monthly expenditure.

i will be saving around 3440 RM ...
after 6 month i will get my full pay.
and during the end of financial year i heard that whatever the tax deducted will be refundable but not fully ...
i may get around 18% of the amount which is deducted as a tax during my 6 month..

Think you misunderstand income tax. Its based on the total annual amount you earn i.e. January to December. You get a tax free portion and then taxed on step basis. You continue to pay normal tax after the first 182 days i.e. it is not correct to say you will pay NO tax. In April next year you fill in a claim for the overpayment and it gets refunded. You can also apply for it earlier, but its quite time consuming. There is a description somewhere on the forum here.

Tax steps on annual salary (i.e. 12 x monthly salary) are:
                 2015
0-5,000                    0%
5,000-10,000      1% RM50
10,001-20,000    1%  +RM50
20,001-35,000    5%  +RM750
35,001-50,000   10%  +RM1,500
50,001-70,000   16% +RM3,200
70,001-100,000   21% +RM6,300
100,001-250,000  24% +RM36,000
250,001-400,000  24.5% +RM36,750
Exceeding 400 000  25%  +RM?

Interest is calculated on any overpayment. The tax system is the same as the Indian and British ones, apart from tax years and thresholds. So no mystery.

I do not understand the additional amount,

-100,001-250,000  24% + RM36,000

for example
if I earn 180000 annually, so the 24% of this amount would be 43200, so is this the final amount or
43200 (24%) + 36000 = 79200

79200 is quite big amount, even annually.

so how much is to be paid 79200 or 43200

These are tax bands. So if you are somewhere along the band you just multiply the % by the amount that falls in that band and add it to the total of the other bands which you totally fulfil. Divide by 12 for monthly deduction.

Guess common sense is not taught everywhere in the world.

Oh! I was not aware that knowing a tax system is a common sense part.
anyways I am not the only one who is not very familiar with the taxation system, never felt the need to understand it because in my country the tax slabs are quite high and normally is not much of a concern, but moving to another country is a big step and people want to know minute details as well.
please see below link for anyone who is a dummy like me into taxation system for understanding the incremental taxation system

i guess some people will learn some common sense (according to gravitas)
