Living Costs - Oslo 2015

Hi,

A friend and her family are moving to Oslo in September / October.

Her salary is around 57,000 NOKs per month before tax. As an expat, she has been told that for the first two years, she would taxed at around 33% and would be left with around 38,000 NOKs cash per month.

For a family of three, based on the information here, I believe the following costs of living would apply:

Rent: 15,000 (2 bedroom apartment or house)
Transport: 3000 (Buses / Train)
Grocery: 7000 (1 year baby + 2 adults)
Utilities, TV and Internet: 3000
Minor expenses: 2000

The above amount to around 30,000 per month. The norwegian classes would be sponsored by the company. They dont plan to buy a car for a while so no fuel or lease cost.

Quick questions.

1. Is the above make sense for the latest costs in Oslo?

2. Am I missing something important out which I have not taken into account?

Thank you for the help in advance.

I have read the cost of living posts and have more or less picked up the costs from there and from discussions with friends there in Oslo. It would be good to have a fresh perspective especially if I am missing something important.

where is she planning to go that will cost that much for the tram and train? If you buy monthly passes on the transportation system for the Oslo city area it's 680 NOK per month for adults: https://ruter.no/kjop-billett/billetter-og-priser/

utilities: what are you planning into that?
-here's an example of a very common provider for internet & TV https://www.get.no/v3/bli-kunde/priser that costs under 800kr per month. You can get mobile phones with data for under 300kr a month. Elecricity isn't going to cost more than 1000kr per month.

I'm also very curious why you're doing all this research for your friend!

Thanks for the feedback ECS. Much appreciated.

Is she living in Oslo?  If so, she is within zone 1, then the transport is NOK 680 for a monthly pass.  If not, it will be more.  You can find out about the monthly pass in the Ruter website.

Utilities is really dependent on how much electricity you are using.  For myself, our family of two only use NOK 700 per month.  Since your friend has a baby, I assume she might use more?

TV license fee is paid bi-annually and it is 2756kr annual fee.  You are billed bi-annually.

Internet/Cable tv is dependent on the package you are getting.  It is generally around 600kr per month.

Is the baby going to a daycare centre? You need to pay 2000+ kr per month for daycare too!  Some daycares might charge more for hot meals etc.

You should probably take into account of any medical fees.  In Norway, if you have been paying tax for 6 months and has a P number, you get subsidised GP visits.  But even though so, you need to pay up to 2000++kr before it gets "free".

Thank you Fornight!  :)  much appreciated.

ah right, I forgot about the TV license as I don't actually own a TV :)
