Hi All,
I'll be coming to Budapest for some studies in the late spring 2011 but I am undecided if I want to be there in April or May.
April would be better for me for the studies but I don't want to be there if it's still 'dreary' after the long months of winter! I want to be able to enjoy the beauty of the city.

Hi,
April weather is changeable, as the old saying goes...
In reality, both months have springtime weather.
Other than the occasional rain (impossible to predict), these months are both fine.

So April wouldn't be the dirty remains of snow, all muddy and mucky with the spring thaw?

Can't make promises, but it would be highly abnormal. That's what late February, early March are there for :-)
