Crime in trinidad

Hi

I am possibly moving to trinidad this year with my partners work but I am really worried about the crime rate.  Please could I get some views on this? If common sense is used ,ie, not venturing out alone at night or to unknown areas etc - would we be save and not really witness any of the crime?  We will be moving with a young child so safety is paramount.
