Finding a car

Can anybody recommend where would be able to find a second hand truck (4x4 preferably) for up to 10K. Also would prefer 4-5 seats.
We are currently staying in Ayampe. Big cities near by Guayaquil and Manta

Greetings, Klein Brothers.

There are some websites for used cars and trucks in EC.

PatioTuerca.com

PatiodeAutos.com

olx.com.ec

The "Ebay of Ecuador," MercadoLibre.com.ec, seems to have a higher percentage of pickup trucks in your price range than some of the other sites.

Good luck finding the Kleinmobile.

For this big ticket item, Klein Bros., you may need to consider traveling.

There are weekend vehicle fairs, but the two "most popular ones" are in the Quito area: one in Pomasqui on the road to Mitad del Mundo, the other in Guamani exiting the south of the capital on the Panamericana.  Source: ecuadorrealestate.org

Also, used cars and trucks that have been on the EC coast for years have been subjected to the erosion of salty ocean air.

Here are some other tips on buying a used vehicle in Ecuador, as posted on ecuadorrealestate.org ...

-- Skip the used car lots.  They can be a big waste of time if you are looking for something specific.  Even if they have it, the deal is probably not great and the car is likely not in good condition.

-- "Go to Quito.  Here you'll find the largest selection."

-- Check the El Comercio (Quito) newspaper on Sunday.

A couple of months back on another thread of this blog, I did some back-and-forth on vehicle-purchase transactions with Neil from Minnesota* (a motorcyclist who had moved to Ecuador).

He recommended that buyers work with a Spanish-speaker who is savvy about vehicle purchasing in EC, especially for paperwork and also to avoid scams.  Apparently, odometer-tinkering, unpaid and undisclosed fines, and even private sellers who take-the-money-and-run...are not unheard-of.

Thanks brother!

If you want to drive legally in Ecuador, your unexpired license and EC insurance proof are requirements for the first few months.

You'll want to use the fact of your unexpired DL to avoid the onerous Spanish-language driving classes and get an EC license by taking a written drivers test.  (It's in espanol, but it's easy -- the answers are posted online.)

Don't wait to get your DL certified and apostilled by the bureaucrats back home -- start the process now.

Bryan Haines wrote about his wife's experience obtaining an EC drivers license (on their web blog gringosabroad.com) through ANT -- Ecuador's Agencia Nacional de Transito.

Found a Car! Ford explorer 97. Went all the way to Ibarra to get it but was worth the adventure. Had a mechanic to help and he said it was a good deal.

Congratulations, Klein Bros.

Did you use one of the websites listed above....

Did you buy from a private seller, or was it a dealership...

It was a private seller. We wNt up to Quito and then even further north to Ibarra (just because we had a friend their) and we found it on the car market. Our mechanic friend helped us with the decision. People told us not to get the cars in Guayaquil, cause it would be difficult to sell later

Looking to buy a car in Quito, similar to Ford Edge, automatic. Ford didnt have one on the lot, just Explorers which are way too big for me.
Any advise?
Chevy dealer had trucks, no SUVs
I am worried about used cars scams so prefer new. Kia? Not sure.
Help!

Visit the car and truck sales websites www.patiotuerca.com
and www.patiodeautos.com

Also, check El Comercio newspaper for listings of metro-Quito weekend fairs.

Most cars available in Ecuador are standard shift.
