Dentist moving to UAE - tips appreciated!

Hi all,

I am a New Zelander living and studying in Australia. I am two years away from finishing a post-grad degree in dentistry and am seriously thinking about moving to somewhere in the UAE when I am finished. I will be moving with my partner, who is a civil engineer. We both are thinking Abu Dhabi or Dubai as we know a couple of people living there and these seem like the most expat-friendly cities in the UAE. I am very open to suggestions though so feel free to change my mind!

I am just wanting to get a general idea of the job market and how easy it is to find health-related jobs as an expat. I have been trying to do some research and I can't seem to find if there are any restrictions to do with the country you qualified in. As I will have qualified in Australia I am assuming that this would be a qualification accepted in the UAE. I am also wondering if it would be in my best interests to find a job through a recruitment agent or approach dental offices directly. Would it be beneficial to get onto this early (maybe in my final year)?

I know that there have been increases in living costs and employment opportunities for expats but I'm finding it a bit difficult to find up-to-date information on the web about making the move. With the recent changes in employment opportunities and living costs is it possible to still be able to save any significant amount of money? I am wanting to make the move to experience a different culture, be closer to family in Europe (anywhere is closer than New Zealand haha) and to be able set up some good savings for the future.

Any advice would be very much appreciated, thanks!

1) You need to be licensed or certified to practice in the UAE by the Ministry of Health.  The procedures are quite cumbersome and vary for degrees / nationalities on a country to country basis.  Better to check directly with them
2) You will have to approach dental offices or hospitals directly as there are very few medical recruiters in the UAE.  Keep in mind that UAE is a popular destination with Dubai even more so.  There will be a lot of competition and generally, if you are not a specialist with years and years of experience and degrees behind you, it's tougher.  Think about it, inexperienced doctors / dentists can be had from India / Pakistan / Egypt cheaper; why would they import one all the way from Australia?
3) Over the last two or three years, Dubai has gone to the pre boom times i.e. become extremely expensive.  Recently, rents have shot up like crazy. Salaries obviously have not moved in sync with this.  You can still save money depending on how you choose to live and how much you earn but generally for most people (especially families), they have to watch their budgets carefully

Good luck

If you have Registration with the Australian Dental Board and  graduated fromdental programs in Australia - you're exempted  from giving exams.

But there is quite a bit of paper work to do. Check eDental website... lot of clear guidance provided on the page.
