Hi Everybody,

Thanks and regards

Neena

I am afraid the rules of the Medical Association in Malaysia do not allow foreign doctors to be registered here, except if they are working in the capacity of a lecturer at one of the universities or colleges.

Yes above correct. Foreign dentists cannot work in Malaysia unless lecturing. Regulations specifically mention Dentists - to protect Malaysians who invest in training overseas and come back to work here. That wouldn't be viable if foreigners were allowed to come and work here

That's simply not true I'm afraid, Gravitas. There is no such thing as the Medical Association of Malaysia. The Malaysian Medical Council has procedures for the registration of foreign doctors which are available on its website. I personally know many foreign doctors who have worked in Malaysia for years as clinicians with no affiliation to a university.

As for dentists, they are regulated by the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and again they have certain rules governing the registration of dentists (including foreigners) which are available online. Neena, can I suggest that your son first check with the MDC if his basic degree is registrable in Malaysia and that he meets the other requirements for registration which will enable him to practise over here? The next step would be to start the jobhunt. If he does it the other way round, there is a danger that he'll get a job offer and then get disappointed if the MDC doesn't recognise his qualifications because, to the best of my knowledge, not all Indian degrees are recognised here.

RSBA - sorry, cannot work as a Doctor as a professional dentist in Malaysia without being registered with the Malaysian Medical Council.

Try it out and see. Its because the Government invests such a lot of money in training and sponsorship, so they do not need foreign medics of any type of work in Malaysia.

There are Indians working in Malaysia, but they have Malaysian citizenship or a PR.  Prey tell us the name of one single Indian citizen working here in a clinical capacity?

You are also right - if it were possible the qualifications are not valid in Malaysia.

There are a few Indians/Westerners (as in Indian citizens) working as Doctors, They have a University post and are allowed to work as specialists on the side BUT employed by a local medical practice. However, you can't just turn up and set up a medical practice here as a foreigner!

I know one, she got her talent pass recently and i think that means she can get work more easily in clinics as above.
Also a PR I think can get permission to practice under a local practice.

I m stayng here in penang with my wife who is a doctor frm india. We tried a lot but cud not get a job for her. Registration process is also nt clear since ur Indian college has to be registerd first n then studmts can apply.. Its ver tough here to do such things..  I think it will take ages for her to get some jobs.. Y can't malaysia follow methods of entrance exams like australia or singapore..

The job market has a lot of protectionism to ensure that as the country is trying to attain "developed" status, there are enough well paid jobs for Malaysians. In fact, there is an over supply of both doctors (who can't get Housemanships or have to share a limited number of places and don't get sufficient patient time) and medical qualification providers.  It is currently being adjusted slowly by increasing the intake qualifications, to ensure that there is not another brain drain (the best ones tend to leave).  I do know of returning Malaysian doctors whose foreign spouses get a PR and can therefore practice, but it is a minority and subject to individual scrutiny by the authorities. There is a fairly strong talent return programme which many doctors are taking up.

The Dentists' organisation in Malaysia has just had its licence revoked because it has some matters it has to define and resolve. It was in yesterday's newspaper. There seem only to be 4000 members.
