Need info with my son's allergy

Hello. I'm an American Egyptian who's been living in NYC for the past 22 years. I have a 2 and 1/2 year old son who's allergic to many things from wheat, barley, dairy, peanut, and other nuts and a few other things that are not that serious. most of the stuff above are severe (number 6). I would like to go on vacation to Cairo next year but I'm not sure if there is a good hospital that I can take him too in case he gets an allergic reaction. Here in NYC i take him to the ER in less than 10 minutes and the doctors usually say that it's a must to take him in to check if his organs are OK ( even if we use the Epipen ).... We usually stay in New maddi or Degla Maddi. I would also like to know if there is an "allergy group" in Cairo that I can reach, or parents who's kids are allergic who live in Cairo.

Thank you
Best regards

There are medical centres and hospitals and private doctors who can help, but I can't recommend anyone specific. The areas you mention like Maadi Degla have great resources for health so you should be able to get help and advice pretty quick. Go to the CSA at livinginegypt.org and start there. People here are very helpful and you should not worry too much. If you need me to check anything out on your behalf I don't mind doing it really, I have 3 daughters too who have dust allergies and although they have been fine so far, any information I get for you will only help me and others in the future. Best of luck.

Thank you very much Samwellbeck. Thank you for your time and your help.  I went to livinginegypt.org and it took me to csa and I don't know what to do there?
I hope your kids feel better and God bless.

Best regards

Hi Adam,
If your son's allergies are severe, I don't think coming to Egypt for vacation is a good idea. Medical care is very hit or miss - and mostly miss.

I have been living here for a year and during that time my daughter has developed allergies. We've dealt with some of the "best" doctors and hospitals and I have been very disappointed (and worried) about the results. 2 of 4 of the pediatricians we have visited don't even take a child's temperature at the visits. None of them use lab results for diagnosing anything and instead rely on "experience" and perscribe antibiotics widely.. Medical care is not closely regulated like in the U.S. We had to go to one of the "best" private hospitals in Egypt for a blood test, which was a terrible experience - it took 2 different technicians to take her blood (after a lot of stabbing) and neither even wore gloves. In a country with a high rate of Hepatitis C, this is very dangerous.

I hate to be negative about all of this - and I came here with optimism and trust in doctors generally. But unfortunately, my experiences have really changed my view.

Thank you very much Jenninegypt for your time, I know exactly what you mean because I've dealt with doctors in Egypt in 2007 and I wasn't happy.  We might not even go in 2011 because we have a another baby boy who just turn 1, but in case of emergency and we have no choice but to go were should we stay and who should we deal with.   I hope your kids feel better and please let me know if I can help with anything.

Best regards

hey adam,,i hope you son is in excellent health,,,well concering egypt health services statues...it has changed dramaticly,,,ofcourse not the public health sector,...but in private sector..as DAr al fouad,,hospital..and al salam hospital...and alot,,has got the joint commision..american accreditation..so relax,,,and come to egypt,,the emergency services in these certain hospital which are to found to in your area has expanded..and accerdiated by the US...

Unfortunately, Dar El Fouad, which does claim to be accredited by some sort of American organization, was the hospital where my daughter's blood was drawn - without gloves. This whappened just a few months ago.

Adam, I suggest you try to locate an allergy specialist before traveling. I don't know of one. The pediatrician we are currently seeing is Mohamed Omar in Maadi. He's pretty closely aligned with the American model, if that is what you are looking for.

Thank you for all the info. Do you have the number for DR mohamed omar?

thank you
