Help: Auckland Accomodation

Hi ,

I am planning to move to Auckland,NZ this june to join for PG course from Unitec. I am coming with my husband and our baby girl(1.5 years old). I will be going for studies and my husband is coming under family stream work visa. He will be looking for a job. Will we get a 1 bedroom apartment with a hall and a kitchen for rent? If not, what are the available options and how much does it costs? Are furnitures provided or do we have to buy ourselves? Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Hi Eliza,

I think that you will know more about accommodation in Auckland if you can have a look to these two useful articles below :

- Accommodation in Auckland
- Accommodation in New Zealand

Thank you :)

Cost of living www.numbeo.com Rents are very high in Auckland. You would not get a rental 1 bdrm for less than $250 a week. Anythinf advertised cheaper would be in a bad area of the city.

Thank you Priscilla. I will go through that :-)

ok thank you stumpy , Just have some doubts left. This 1 bedroom for $250 is just a bedroom or is it an apartment with 1 bedroom( 1 living room + 1 kitchen + 1 bedroom +1 toilet) ??? Else what it is called? Is baby allowed to stay in 1 bedroom rental?

Kitchen, bedroom, toilet, lounge and usually really small. You would have to discuss the baby with the landlord.
And just remember the price I gave you is just the lowest price in a not so nice area. For better areas of the city the price could be a lot higher.
Best you do an online search for want you want.

ok thank you stumpy :-)

80% of apartments available to rent are listed on trademe.com.  You will not be able to create an account from another country (unless you are a techie and can alias your IP), but you can get phone numbers to call of apartments you would like to consider.

Trademe's Terms and Conditions state:
"3.1 Becoming a Member: Becoming a member is free. You may only register as a member if you are resident in New Zealand or Australia (unless specifically authorised by us in writing) and can form a legally binding contract that is enforceable against you. You must be at least 18 years old. By registering as a member, you warrant that you can form a legally binding contract. "

So, yes, you can create an account in another country, as long as it is Australia.

Second, you do not need an account to view any of the listings. Some rental ads on TradeMe list the agent's contact details (email address or phone number) in the ad itself, or they list the name of the property management company so you can look them up online. In some cases, the contact details will only appear if you are logged in as a TradeMe account holder/member. You will also need to be logged in as a member to send a message as a TradeMe account holder to another account holder.

As for the techie stuff, it's called VPN or virtual private network. Once you are a VPN customer and are set up and logged in to the VPN service, your IP address will be geolocated to the VPN server's 'location.' Unfortunately, there are very few VPN service providers with actual VPN server IP addresses registered or located in New Zealand. There are several with IP addresses in Australia. Hidemyass.com has both, although I would not recommend them.

Do yourself a favour. Do not take a place that you haven't viewed in person....
Because the picture might seem perfect, however in reality ... ???

I am a landlord myself ... I wouldn't rent a one bedroom to a family of 3 purely because of the space.
The baby will fast outgrow the space ... landlords want long term tenants. Best is to get 2 bedroom.

Not all the homes are the same. You get old and cold ones ...  and modern and new and very well insulated homes to.
In the end you get what you pay for. Take your time when renting a place. Because your health depends on it.
And health care is not of the best, unless you have private health care. You need to be seriously ill before you get to se a specialist,. So if you come from a country where ... when the baby is sick to visit your paediatrician... those days are over. Your GP will be your option of choice. And better request antibiotics  when you feel the need, because they wish to cure most "things" with pain meds a lot. The point being, take a very well insulated place please!
