Medication availability in Bogota, Colombia

Hello -

I am currently living working in Bogota, Colombia.  Now, I am right off the boat (plane, really) and have a few questions maybe someone might have some ideas about.

I am currently on an opiod medication called Duragesic (Fentanyl Transdermal Patch) and have been for about 6 years now.  I can go back to the states and see my regular doc and get my meds on a monthly basis, but my concern is ever being stuck down here without, which would be a big problem.

Are Duragesic patches even available here in Bogota or any where else in Colombia?

If so, how are the Colombians as far as prescribing narcotics?  Would it be possible to get them here in an emergency or maybe even just continue seeinga doc in Bogota and cut out the hassle of having to fly back to the states every month or so?

Money really isn't a concern - I think my insurance would even cover it here

Interesting question Simon. i have considered moving to bogota however, have monthly medications which i have been concerned whether certain prescriptions are allowed.

What feedback have you received regarding your question outside this blog?  any?

This post has been dead for a while it seems.... but for anyone else interested: you can buy almost any medications over the counter (Tylenol is Called Dolex, Vicodine is called Sinalgen, etc down here). Use a google translator to find the name of the actual drug (not the brand name) and any pharmacist will help you out. For rare types of medication visit pharmacies nears hospitals.
A Us prescription will usually work without much effort. A smile goes a long way.

Hi,
I am with Colsanitas & I truly believe you can recieve the best treatm, ent here in Colombia. I have had a foot/nail problem for many years & under a doctor in England for many years . I visited a specialist here and I had the condition completely eradicated in under 2 weeks. Can you imagine how much I paid in England for the wrong prescriptions? I paid around 6 bucks for a complete cure. My gut feeling is trust the medical profession here as they are very good

I agree with Alan, it is very unlikely that you won't be able to get a prescription for what you need and besides that, if you don't, you can get over the counter a lot of stuff which you would consider unthinkable elsewhere in the Western world.

@AlanViscount or anyone in Bogota in this forum. Can you please provide the name of your foot specialist? I would really appreciate it.
