Permant Residency Application - question re Legalization of documents

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I'm planning to apply for permanent residency in Paraguay and have my first question about the application.

When obtaining legalizations of my birth certificate and police clearance certificate, is the requirement to legalize the originals? Or is the requirement to legalize COPIES? This isn't clear to me, but it seems strange to affix stamps to the original document (particularly the birth certificate).

Can someone advise?

Thanks,
Lizette

Thank you!

Hi Lizette,
I'm also going the same process to obtain residency in Paraguay. I'm still legalizing the documents. I don't have an answer to your question . I think it's better to legalize both original and copy.

I wanted to ask you if you already thought about having vaccines (especially against yellow fever)?
I'm really worrying about vaccines and diseases there. I don't know if It's common that poeple get infected there, because i don't think It's possible to protect one's self from mosquitos at all time when living there?

If intrested we can talk more  in skype about all things concerning the permanent residency process in Paraguay.
Here's my Skype nickname: koko_n9

Yours faithfully,

You must legalize the originals, the government offices  you visit will have you make copies and get them notarized/legalized locally if they need to keep copies.

As for vaccines, there are areas of Paraguay, I believe in the north east corner, where Yellow Fever is a concern, or maybe Malaria.   I've not heard of either of these diseases being a problem in the majority of the country though.   Most of the Paraguay suffers from problems with Degnue Fever which is caused by mosquito's and unfortunately there is no vaccine for it.  You must just be careful to take  standard "anti-mosquito measures"  especially if your living in a rural area that has lots of water (lakes, rivers, etc..).

It's a bit confusing at first: as Paraguay is not member of the apostille convention, all signatures of the documents must be properly certified, and that means ALL signatures. Better I give you an example. I am Italian: my birth certificate is issued by the municipality I reside in; the signature on this document must be certified by the "prefetto" or prefect; his signature must be certified by the Paraguayan consulate; and this last signature will be, in turn, be certified by the foreign ministry in Asunción. Only then you will be able to have the document translated by an officila translator. Any copies of the translation must include the originals and be certified by an "escribano" (notary).

This is fresh new info from Migration Office:

Documents from countries abroad, should first be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that Country (or similar) and later by the Paraguayan Consulate.

To graph this, for example FBI reports, should be legalized by US State Department, and later by the Paraguayan consulate. It might happen that Pyan Consulate says that the US State Department is not necessary, but Migration Office has a different criteria.

@ Lonnie M: Thank you for the sharing of information which will be very useful for the members of Expat.com :)

Prior to arriving in Paraguay I collected and legalised all the documents on the list provided to me by the legal service I chose to go with (Jeronimo Finestra paraguayresidency.com) - but before I left Australia I double checked the document stamps and copies with Jeronimo and the Paraguayan consulate in Australia.

The legalisation stamps needed to be an "authentication stamp" by the Aus Gov and my banking documents required another trip to my bank to ensure I had a letter stating I had a bank account signed by a twit with a title of bank manager.

Its worth double checking your documents are in order before you arrive in Paraguay because I've heard from others that today there is a stricter adherance to perfect documentation that in past times.
