Hey Dave,
In general the best residential areas for renting an apartment ( am assuming that you are looking for a flats and not a villa) are Al Rawda, Al Hamra and Al Zahra. And for cheaper options Al Salama and Al Faysalia. (it's important to be near your workplace since driving in Jeddah is becoming time consuming ).
You need to be sure about the conditions of the water supply and sewage treatment in the building since you could end paying an extra 50-200SR/Month.
Having a parking space is another important aspect to look at
