Visas for self-employed???

Hi,

I'm moving to NZ this month on a 1-year WHV and plan to get full-time, regular, basic work to begin with.

However, I am also looking to expand my client base as a translator and get my foot in the door of the translation/interpretation industry. This would probably mean being self-employed and working for various different companies as a freelancer. What visa would I apply under, once my WHV runs out next Winter (or Summer, I guess!)??? I don't have millions of pounds to invest in the country, nor to I have a sought after skill, such as nursing or carpentry. What would I do?

Thanks!!

There is very little work for translators in NZ.
You should perhaps do an online search to see if there is an opening.

I suggest a visit to the NZ immigration website for information regarding visa changes and status.

What about transcription of documentary audio/video, hearings, student interviews, police interviews, etc., etc?

I also proof and edit anything from book manuscripts to government reports to ad. copy.

I'm also self-employed, and when I have overflow work I pass it on, giving others a part-time income too, and sometimes they make more than I do!

I do not want to find a job- I am my job, and I'm extremely good at what I do. I also train, by the way, and pass the knowledge on to others with the acumen.

In your case you should look into getting a business visa so you can set yourself up that way.
You still need to access the immigration website for visa information.

Once you are in country legally and have a right to work, you can apply for GST registration with the IRD. Once you are GST-registered as a sole trader, you can conduct business as a self-employed contractor. You can also register a business in New Zealand. It is comparatively inexpensive and easy to do. In New Zealand, only one person is required to form a company. See:
