New turn of events!

Hello friends... Just received an email from the HR of MOH. I will NOT be joining Royal Hospital Muscat but other hospital as Specialist Paediatrics in the NON CAPITAL region. I will be pasting a list of the hospitals I have gathered from MOH website. It  will be highly helpful if you could please help me  with the following information regarding each area please.

1) is there any Indian school in the area? How is it? Is there any other schools frequented by Indian expats? My son is in std 1.
2) how is the day to day family life? Is there anything to do there for the family and kids?
3) is there any area you would suggest I say NO to as a family man?

Here is the list. Please ignore the capital area hospitals.

Help will be very very highly appreciated.

WoW ... Man! These hospitals are scattered allover Oman; the question now is; Where will you be based?! Is it up to you to decide on the location or your employer will do?

If its a kind of rotational work, then its always better to be based in Muscat to have an easy access to the rest of the areas.

Please mind the distances between the different cities in Oman, that's why knowing where you will be based is of a great importance to you!

I will be posted in any one of them, exactly which one I don't know. What I know is NOT IN MUSCAT.  If you have idea about those places in the questions I have asked can you please help. It may help me decide to choose if at all I am given a choice.
Many thanks in advance.

Nizwa and Sohar are your best bet. Both are more developed than the other areas.

I don't have a detailed answer to your questions though, hope other family men around can give you a comprehensive answers :)

Good Luck!

Thanks very much!

Hello dr_aich,

I would add Sur and Salalah to Nizwa and Sohar which VidoDido has already mentioned. The rest of the places are in far-flung 'interiors'. The medium of communication will only be Arabic. And you have no option but to learn Arabic, to even lead your day-to-day life.

Being 'interiors', there will be no social life. No Indian Schools. And nothing to do.

Working in the interiors is by no means easy. So harden yourself mentally to take on the many challenges that lie ahead.

Best wishes.

Thanks Mr Sumitran

Fingers crossed I am given a choice. Just to disturb once again could you please list Nizwa, Sur, Sohar and Salalah as 1 2 3 4 , mostly keeping schooling and family life in view please. If at all I am given a choice.
Many thanks in advance.

Hello dr_aich,

Listing the places basis their desirability scale is no big challenge as there is very little to choose between them.

In any case, for your satisfaction here are my personal ratings :

1. Salalah - Second capital of the Sultanate; His Majesty's hometown; Khareef in summer; massive malls and hypermarkets; lots of Indian expatriates; Indian School.

2. Nizwa - Ancient town with a very famous fort and a souq; lots of Indian expatriates; Indian School.

3. Sur - Oman's oldest trading post, from where the ancient Omanis set sail to seek their fortunes across India and even up to China in their handcrafted Dhows; hometown of the Bahwans; ONLG's plant is situated here; many Indian expatriates.

4. Sohar - Small town; Industrial Estate; Port Services; Indian School and many Indian expatriates.

Please be aware that that the quality of education in all these places will leave a lot to be desired. For that matter even in Muscat's best Indian Schools, the quality of education provided does not match with what is available for similar standards back home.

Good luck.

whats about ibra and ibrii

Both are very small towns, with little or no social life for expatriates.

ibri definitely can be boring
