Travel Insurance

Hello, I am looking for some advice on travel insurance from any brits who have emigrated to Canada.

Basically we are flying out one way the Vancouver on January 9 2014 but are struggling to find travel insurance as once we arrive we will not be able to gain health insurance for the first few months, and as we have 3 young children we cannot afford to take the risk of going uninsured - all the insurance companies in the UK need a return date otherwise they cannot insure us and as we are going permanently are unable to provide this?

Is there anyone out there who has had the same problem when moving and can give me advice of how to go about this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,

I think the three month rule affects most temporary workers, it sure did us.
Multiple Canadian insurance companies offer coverage for this period, I think we got Bluecross. Silly expensive and luckily we never needed it :-)

Hi gtf7107,

The public healthcare system is operated by each individual province, under the guidance of the federal government. As far as I know they all have a 90 day waiting period between when premiums begin to be paid in and benefits go into effect.

Most insurance companies that operate in Canada offer short term healthcare plans that cover this gap. The will of course most always exclude pre-existing conditions. You shouldn't have much trouble arranging coverage once you get to Canada. It may look expensive, but it's certainly a lot cheaper than the costs of not having coverage if you need it.

You should also look at your present coverage under your national healthcare system. You may find that they will cover (at least) emergency medical care in other countries.
