Taxes on receiving a used lap top?

Hi all,

A friend wants to send me a rather used lap top ( 6 year old Mac in great working order, apparently) here in Saigon, but I'm curious to know what the post office / customs officials will try to charge me in tax to collect it.  Any educated guesses or similar experience?

Basically if the tax is very high then I won't ask my friend to send it.

Thanks!

They'll most likely try to charge you import tax equivalent to the value of the tax on a new computer. Don't send electronic equipment here that way. Better to have someone bring it with them in a carry-on on a flight here for you. Otherwise, you're better off to just go to a shop here and buy a new one.

Thanks, I was afraid of that... Anyone else have experience with this?

Sadly my friend won't be visiting VN any time soon to walk it in for me :(

I sent my grandma a portable dvd player and she wasn't too happy with the 400000 odd dongz she had to pay.
Also sent my in-laws some rechargeable led headlamps and they had to pay too.
As saigonmonkey said, best if someone could carry it back.

Thanks for responses.
