What happened to the city?

I've just read a news article that states that -

"The Ho Chi Minh City government has ordered police to be stationed at all major downtown streets to protect tourists and locals from street crime.
The city government has also given permission to police in District 1 to set up street cameras for surveillance."

Geez! I know that HCMC has always been a place one should take care, and this should be common policy when in any city, but when the local Gov. needs cameras on street poles and officers on each corner.Wow.

Any thoughts?

Well, that is right within the line of reasoning the American government use to gather information on Americans, as revealed by Edward Snowden.  :dumbom:

so they will be wearing uniform now?

But...for safety, take your bag, your camera, your phone...by your self. Nobody don't know what will happening.

Yeah.I am trying not to think of that concept here.

That's good information.Unfortunately many visitors have a sense of "it won't happen to me".This is a hard concept to get rid of.

No idea what they'll be wearing. My guess it will be the green uniformed tourist 'police'.

Nope.  It is too late.  This is the great Socialist Republic of Vietnam we are talking about.  Big Brother has been watching you the moment to stepped off of the airplane.

In recent years, the inflation rate has been bad; therefore, they are resorting to cameras and themselves, as opposed to outsourcing such duties to "xe oms" and street vendors.

Yeah.  They are going to be wearing blue short-sleeve shirts and beige pants (Or are those shorts, Khanh?).  :dumbom:

Welcome to the 21st Century. For quite some time and for a lot longer than we know your and my government have been keeping track of you, ALL emails and phone conversations are monitored for key words. Cameras are literally everywhere in American cities. The good news is that the first pictures of the Boston Marathon bombers were seen on video. Other terrorist plots have been foiled using these and other techniques.

The real question is when does government surveillance infringe upon personal privacy?

As soon as it violates a person's rights, as provided by the 4th Amendment of the US Constitution.

They can record and store all that they want.  As soon as I see my image flashes across a screen, without me violating any law, I will be taking people to court.  The entertainment industry have an appearance release form for a reason.

Danny,

They could be...  It is the socialist method of outsourcing.  If you have a chance, get to know your ward officer.  You will be amazed at who is keeping tracks of you.

Every area has its local snitch, its just a part of life in VN.If you dont break the law you have nothing to worry about.

I agree with this statement but I feel I'm in the minority here in Canada and probably Western culture. Don't see the harm in having people watch me pick my nose, scratch my ass but I guess some people value their privacy more.

I rather there be more surveillance and people watching me. It's free body guard service.

no warnings from smarttraveller.com we have cameras every where in perth any way to catch murderers thieves rapists traffic violators and such , read the west Australian news paper, youl be shocked

They have had surveillance cameras for years. Now instead of watching out for illegal protest and subversive activities they will be looking for real criminals

Well for having all these cameras in all these streets in the big wide world they don't seem to catch to many top layer criminals!!!!!
They always catch small fish and make a big deal about it.

I doubt too may top criminals would be doing crime on the street, thats why they have foot soldiers.
