Can anyone recommend good shops where to look for a bicycle?
Preferably a second-hand shop or so, as I don't know how long I am going to stay.
I've heard stories that cycling in Malta may often be a rather bad experience due to mad drivers and narrow streets - is it that bad in reality? As for the heat... no need to mention it

yes it is - many do cycle but it is dangerous due to bad roads and seriously bad drivers.
try the cycle hire shops they often have used bikes for sale
